PLN'S PLTA STOPS OPERATING

Manado, Sept 28 (ANTARA) - The hydro-electric plant PLTA Tonsea Lama, Tanggari I and Tanggari II in North Sulawesi with a capacity of 42 megawatts (MW) may have to stop operating if the water level of lake Tondano continued to drop.

"The level of the water flowing into the PLTA now reached only 198 centimeters, which is only 18 cm above the minimum of 180 cm," spokesman for state power firm PT PLN overseeing Suluttenggo, Johanis Dimpudus said in Manado Monday.

With the water level dropping 62 cm of the normal 260 cm, Dimpudus said PLN would be forced to stop operating the PLTA during the day.

"The seven generators of the three power plants will be operated from 5 p.m to midnight local time, as they need to collect water first for 15 to 18 hours," Dimpudus said.

Dimpudus added that if the water level continued to drop to below 180 cm, PLN would have to stop operating the PLTA.

Dimpudus also said PLN is now trying to lease diesel power plants (PLTDs) from independent power producers with a capacity of 20 MW.

"But it would not be until the end of this year that this plan could be carried out, because negotiations were still underway with the owners of the power plant," he said.

He said it was difficult to secure power supply in North Sulawesi until the end of the year, because a number of PLTDs were damaged and not operating.

"PLTD Bitung has nine generators but only six are operating," Dimpudus said.

The installed power capacity of PLTD Birung in North Sulawesi up to this day reached 19 MW, PLTA 20 MW, geothermal power plant PLTP Lahendong 38,5 MW, PLTD Lopana Amurang 8 MW, PLTD Kotamobagu 6 MW, mini-hydro power plant PLTM Mopuya 3 MW, PLTD Minahasa 23.75 MW and leased diesel power plant 8.75 MW.

In normal conditions, the power capacity in North Sulawesi reached 156 MW, but PLN could supply only less than 130 MW. ***2***
