YEMEN APPROVES YEMEN'S ACCESSION TO MONTREAL CONVENTION 1999

SANA'A, Sep. 29 (Saba) - The cabinet approved in its weekly meeting on Tuesday a memorandum of Transport Minister on Yemen's accession to Montreal Convention 1999 based on protecting the passengers of the air transportation.

The cabinet directed the concerned ministers to complete the necessary constitutional procedures for the accession to the convention.

The Montreal Convention is a treaty adopted by a Diplomatic meeting of International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) member states in 1999. It amended important provisions of the Warsaw Convention's regime concerning compensation for the victims of air disasters.

It protects passengers by introducing a two-tier liability system and by facilitating the swift recovery of proven damages without the need for lengthy litigation.

Montreal Convention was brought about mainly to amend liabilities to be paid to families for death or injury whilst on board an aircraft.

As of August 2009, there were 92 signatories to the Montreal Convention, including the United States, European Union (EU), Australia, Canada, China, Japan, Korea and Mexico.
