Finance minister to attend IMF meeting in Turkey
SEOUL, Oct. 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's finance minister will leave for Turkey
this week to attend the annual meeting of the International Monetary Fund (IMF)
and the World Bank where global leaders are to discuss economic issues and reform
measures for the two organizations, Seoul officials said Thursday.
Finance Minister Yoon Jeung-hyun will leave for Istanbul on Friday to attend the
conference, which will kick off the following day with the launch of sideline
meetings, according to the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.
During his stay, Yoon will meet with his counterparts and central bankers from
other member nations to discuss pending global economic and financial issues. He
is to deliver a keynote speech for the annual conference on Tuesday to emphasize
the importance of sustainable and balanced global economic growth and ongoing
reform drives for the IMF and the World Bank, the ministry said.
Yoon will also attend the G-20 steering committee comprised of finance ministers
from the United States, Britain and Canada to prepare for November's ministerial
talks and summit meetings to be held next year among the group of advanced and
emerging countries.
He will return home on Thursday.
The annual conference comes right after the G-20 summit in Pittsburgh which ended
last week. Global leaders called for each nation to cooperate in withdrawing
stimulus measures that have been introduced to stimulate the slumping global
economy, hit-hard by financial turbulence last year.
During the gathering, South Korea was selected as a venue for a G-20 summit to be
held later next year.
