SOME 4,500 RESCUE WORKERS HELPING AND EVACUATING QUAKE VICTIMS

Padang, W Sumatra, Oct 1 (ANTARA) - As many as 4,530 rescue team members from various quarters have been deployed to evacuate quake the victims in West Sumatra.

They have been working since Wednesday focusing on collapsed buildings where dozens of people were believed still buried under the rubbles.

Heavy-duty equipment and machinery had been mobilized to assist the rescue and evacuation efforts.

The rescue team members came from the army (1,200 personnel), navy (3000), airforce (100), police (1,200), the scout movement (200), the red cross (130) and firemen (100). Until Thursday evening 478 bodies had been discovered and evacuated to nearby hospitals.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono arrived in Padang Thursday evening to inspect the situation. He would spend the night there.

The 7.6 magnitude earthquake which rocked Padang on Wedensday evening, leaving more than 300 people killed and thousands others were still trapped in the rubble of collapsed houses and buildings. ***3***
