MINISTER CALLS FOR PRAYERS FOR QUAKE FATALITIES

Banda Aceh, Oct 1 (ANTARA) - Religious Affairs Minister Muhammad Maftuh Basyuni called on Muslims in the country here on Thursday to conduct special prayers for the dead in quake-ridden West Sumatra.

"Muslims throughout the country are called on to conduct "ghaib" prayers for Muslims killed in the quake in West Sumatra," he said.

He likewise called on other religious people to also pray in their own ways for the safety of the nation which had faced various ordeals like earthquakes.

He also appealed to the people to extend help in the form of materials or prayers to make the quake victims in West Sumatra to remain strong in deal with the ordeal.

Any form of help would be useful for the people of West Sumatra who are now facing difficulties. "Give them help," he said.

He called on all the victims to remain faithful facing the disaster.

Muslim clerics in Aceh province earlier issued a similar call on Muslims in the region to conduct the special prayers.

"Muslims in Aceh are called on to conduct ghaib prayers for their fellow Muslims who had died in the disaster in West Sumatra," the secretary general of the Association of Aceh Islamic boarding schools, Tgk Faisal Aly said in Banda Aceh on Thursday.

"As faithful religious followers we must believe that the disaster is a test from Allah. Allah will not test people beyond their capacity," he said.

The 7.6 temblor hit west Sumatra on Wednesday (September 30) at 17.16 local time.

According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency the epicenter of the quake was located at 0.84 degrees southern latitude and 99.65 degrees northern longitude, 57 kilometers northwest of Pariaman district, West Sumatra, at a depth of 71 kilometers.

It was also located 78 km northwest of Padang, 99 km southwest of Bukit Tinggi, 106 km northeast of Mentawai Islands.***3***
