PM to visit Arunachal on Saturday
New Delhi, Oct 2 (PTI) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
will travel to poll-bound north-eastern state of Arunachal
Pradesh on Saturday, his second visit in nearly two years to
the border state.
Singh will address an election meeting at Pasighat in
support of the party candidates for the October 13 Assembly
elections.
He had last travelled to Arunachal Pradesh on his maiden
visit in January last year. During the visit, he had dismissed
China's claim over the state while asserting that it was "our
land of rising sun".
China had later expressed its unhappiness over his visit
to the state. The Chinese objections were denounced by the
government which asserted that Arunachal belongs to India and
Beijing had no locus standi to question the Prime Minister's
visit there.
India has been asserting that elections have been held
regularly in Arunachal Pradesh and the state has been sending
its elected representatives to Parliament.
The Prime Minister's visit on Saturday comes in the
backdrop of Chinese incursions which the Government here has
been trying to downplay, saying such incidents happen due to
differing perceptions over Line of Actual Control.
Significantly, Singh was the first Prime Minister to
visit Arunachal Pradesh last year in 12 years. PTI MS
