S. Korea beats U.S. 3-0 to advance to 2nd round of 16



SUEZ, Egypt, Oct. 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea Friday advanced to the second round
of 16 of the under-20 FIFA World Cup by beating the United States 3-0.
South Korea faces Paraguay in the knockout stage to advance to the quarter finals.

South Korea came in second in Group C, with four points from one draw with
Germany and one win over the U.S. Cameroon has defeated South Korea 2-0.
Germany also advanced to the second round, topping Group C with seven points from
one draw with South Korea and two wins, over Cameroon and the U.S.
It is the first time in six years -- since 2003 -- that South Korea advanced to
the second round of the under-20 FIFA World Cup.
Kim Young-gwon and Kim Bo-kyung scored goals in the 23rd minute and 42nd minute,
respectively, to give the South Koreans an early lead in the first half of the
game at a stadium here.
Koo Ja-cheol netted a goal with a penalty in the 29th minute of the second half
to finish at 3-0 in the first win over the Americans in the under-20 World Cup
after two draws and a loss.
U.S. defender Ike Opara was evicted after getting a yellow card for a foul in the
penalty area.
Italian referee Roberto Rosetti issued several yellow cards to the Americans, who
turned violent as time grew short in the second half.
The South Koreans have recorded five wins, three draws and one loss in the
overall under-20 match history with the U.S.
