VP DENIES PARTS OF WEST SUMATRA OBLITERATED
Padang, INDONESIA, Oct 3 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla said it was not true that Wednesday's 7.6 earthquake had obliterated parts of West Sumatra.
"From my observation, many houses and buildings in the quake-hit areas are not destroyed. The damage caused by Wednesday's earthquake is estimated to be 17 percent," the vice president said after inspecting the areas in Padang and Pariaman district on Saturday.
Kalla said Ambacang Hotel was heavily damaged but many hotels and buildings were still intact.
Therefore, the vice president said the information and perception that the West Sumatra city of Padang was obliterated by the earthquake was not true.
"Padang is not a ghost city. Lives and economic activities are gradually returning to normal, but to reduce the trauma of the quake victims, the rubble of collapsed houses and buildings should immediately be cleared," the vice president said.
Therefore he had ordered the Padang mayor to have the rubble cleared in a week.
Commenting on the emergency response in the aftermath of earthquake, the vice president said it was running well.
"I have checked emergency response activity in the quake-hit areas and I found it is running well," the vice president said, adding that the evacuation process was primarily for the survivors, and then for the missing people and the dead bodies.
The vice president said the rescue workers were assisted by police and military personnel, as well as domestic and foreign volunteers.
He said food stocks and medical supplies were enough to support the emergency response process.
In addition, hospital services were also running well with the support of medical teams from overseas.
According to the vice president, the emergency response to evacuate the quake victims, to evaluate, and to rehabilitate and reconstruct would last for two months and if need be it would be extended.
The powerful 7.6 earthquake which rocked West Sumatra on Wednesday was also felt by people in Batam, Singapore, and even Malaysia.***
