AP government sees ray of hope as flood situation improves

Hyderabad, Oct 3 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh government
Saturday said it sees a ray of hope as the unprecedented flood
situation in the state has begun to improve.

"The flood situation is slowly improving. The water level
is receding in the worst-affected Kurnool, Mahabubnagar and
Krishna districts, giving us a ray of hope. We are doing
our best in helping people," Chief Minister K Rosaiah told
reporters after an all-party meeting here.

Prime Minister of India Manmohan Singh and United
Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi have
assured all help in tackling flood situation, he said.

Though the official death toll has been put at 16, the
number is likely to be much higher as the government said its
priority is to offer help to the victims rather than
identifying the dead.

Reports reaching here, however, said a large number of
people were missing in many remote places of the district.

Rosaiah announced an ex-gratia of Rs one lakh to the kin
of the deceased and financial assistance to the victims as per
government norms.

About 1,34,000 people in Mahabubnagar district, over 1.05
lakh in Kurnool and 15,000 in Krishna district have been
shifted to safer places, he said. (MORE) PTI SJR
