India trip was fruitful, says Victorian premier

Melbourne, Oct 6 (PTI) Victorian premier John Brumby
Tuesday said his recent India trip was fruitful and he
"certainly got the message out that the state government was
taking concrete action" to prevent any violence against the
Indian community in Australia.

Brumby said he was able to assure Indian authorities that
his government was doing all it could to curb attacks on young
Indians.

"I visited a number of educational establishments, I
spoke at a number of business gatherings and I think I
certainly got the message out that we are taking concrete
action in Victoria," he was quoted by an AAP report.

"(We have) more police, a bigger police budget, stronger
powers, plus a student support package to support overseas
students who study in our state," he who was quoted as saying
by ABC radio.

Brumby said "Having just spent eight days in India, there
are certainly those in India whose concerns have been raised
about events in Melbourne over the last few months.

"But for every one person you would meet there who would
raise a concern, there would be another two who would say that
they know students, or know family, or know friends, who are
in Melbourne and believe it to be one of the safest cities
anywhere in the world and they are 100 per cent satisfied with
the educational experience that they have got," he said.
