UNICEF PROVIDES 250 TENTS FOR DAMAGED W SUMATRA SCHOOLS
Padang, Indonesia, Oct 8 (ANTARA) - The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has provided 250 tents for damaged schools in West Sumatra which was devastated by a magnitude-7.6 earthquake last week.
"We will distribute the tents in Padang city and Padang Pariaman district," UNICEF spokesperson Leli Djauhari said here on Thursday.
She said the tents could be used as temporary shelters for the activities of children whose schools were damaged by the earthquake.
According to UNICEF, a total of 15 tents have been set up in Padang city, among others at SMA Negeri 1 (senior high school) and SD (elementary school) Gurun Laweh.
Besides tents, UNICEF was also providing emergency study tool packages for about 4,800 school children. Each of the packages contains 80 study tool items such as books, ballpoints and other things.
Leli said that UNICEF would do its best to encourage children to return to school after the earthquake which killed at least 700 people.
"We are also trying to restore the mentality of children who suffered from traumatic problems as a result of the earthquake," she said.
In its program in West Sumatra, UNICEF also provided clean water, assisted in finding clean water resources and provided a sanitation program.
The powerful earthquake devastated Padang city, the provincial capital of West Sumatra last week, killing at least 700 people and leaving more than 300 missing.
Besides, the number of those suffering from serious injuries was recorded at 744 people, minor ones at 1,343. However, unofficial estimate put the victims at thousands of people as many were still buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
The earthquake also destroyed 101,653 houses, caused damage to 97,995 others.
A number of hotels, restaurants and their supporting facilities were also destroyed. Of the 47 star-rated hotels in West Sumatra, 24 were damaged, of which 11 were destroyed. Among those destroyed were the Ambacang, Rocky Plaza, Mariani, Nuasa and Hayam Wuruk hotels.***
