PMI DISTRIBUTES HUNDREDS OF POUCHES OF BLOOD IN W SUMATRA
Jakarta, Oct 8 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) has distributed hundreds of pouches of blood among victims of the earthquake which struck West Sumatra killing over 700 people last week.
The PMI said in a press release here on Thursday that it had distributed 617 pouches of blood through Padang's Blood Transfusion Unit (UTDC).
With the PMI's contribution, the total number of pouches of blood Padang's UTDC had distributed had reached 1,217.
Of the 1,217 pouches of blood distributed by PMI, 60 came from UTDC Pekan Baru, 43 from Palarawan Riau, 15 from Sijunjung, 100 from Jakarta, 100 from Solo, six from Bukit Tinggi, 100 from Palembang, 87 from Bengkulu, and 106 from UTDD Riau.
Up to 8 pm on Wednesday the death toll in West Sumatra reached 739 people.
The powerful earthquake devastated Padang city, the provincial capital of West Sumatra last week, killing at least 739 people and leaving more than 300 missing.
Besides, the number of those suffering from serious injuries was recorded at 744 people, minor ones at 1,343. However, unofficial estimate put the victims at thousands of people as many were still buried under the rubble of collapsed buildings.
The earthquake also destroyed 101,653 houses, caused damage to 97,995 others.
A number of hotels, restaurants and their supporting facilities were also destroyed. Of the 47 star-rated hotels in West Sumatra, 24 were damaged, of which 11 were destroyed. Among those destroyed were the Ambacang, Rocky Plaza, Mariani, Nuasa and Hayam Wuruk hotels.***
