BEI INDEX OPENS SLIGHTLY LOWER

Jakarta, Oct. 8 (ANTARA) - The Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) at the Indonesian Stock Exchange (BEI) opened slightly lower here on Thursday morning after rallies over the past three days.

The BEI index went down 2.378 points or 0.06 percent to 2,511.028 points and the LQ-45 index dropped 0.491 points or 0.14 percent to 494,624 points.

"The position of the Indonesian stocks is still above the level of 2,500 points because of a slight decrease. The depreciation does not pressure the index to the level of below 2,500 points," Alfianysah, a stock broker of PT Sinarmas Securities, said here on Thursday.

He predicted that the BEI index would strengthen again soon thanks to the ongoing market's positive sentiment and foreign investors were still lured to invest in the country.

The HSBC survey put Indonesia's in the position of 121, one point below China, but far ahead of India which is 117 points, he said.
Shares which lost include those of Astra group, namely United Tractor shares which went down Rp250 to Rp15,400, Astra shares which weakened Rp100 to Rp34,600, and cigarette and bank industries such as Gudang Garam shares which plunged Rp50, HM Sampoerna shares that fell Rp150 per share, private bank BCA shares which slumped Rp75 to Rp4,850, and coal mining company Bukit Asam shares which dropped Rp250 to Rp14,200.
