ASEM members to discuss boosting private-sector investment

SEOUL, Oct. 11 (Yonhap) -- High-ranking government officials and leaders in
global organizations and the business community mostly from Asia and Europe will
gather in South Korea this week to discuss how to boost investment in the private
sector, organizers said Sunday.

The Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Conference on Public-Private Partnerships in
Infrastructure will kick off on Thursday in Seoul for a two-day run with around
100 to 150 participants expected to attend the gathering, according to Seoul's
Ministry of Strategy and Finance, which organized the event jointly with the
European Commission.
The conference is a follow-up on promises made during the ASEM meeting in June
last year aimed at bolstering investment in the private sector in a bid to help
the group's members overcome global financial difficulties, the ministry said.
ASEM is an informal cooperative body of 27 European Union member states and 16
Asian countries plus the European Commission and the ASEAN Secretariat.
Participants in this week's conference include Mario Amano, deputy secretary
general of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, J. Luis
Guasch, senior advisor of the World Bank, and other high-ranking officials from
credit agency Fitch Ratings and other government and private-sector bodies, the
ministry said.
