S. Korea pays huge interest on state debt

SEOUL, Oct. 12 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's government has paid nearly 80 trillion won (US$68.7 billion) in interest on its national debt over the past seven years, a report showed Monday.

According to the report compiled by a lawmaker for an annual audit of the finance
ministry, interest payment by the government totaled 79.4 trillion won between
2003 and 2009.
Annual interest payment has been rising, the report showed. The government paid 7
trillion won in interest on its debts in 2003, with the figure increasing to 13.4
trillion won in 2008 before growing to 15.7 trillion won this year.
