Friends largest source of sexual knowledge in India: Study
New Delhi, Oct 12 (PTI) Starved of sexual knowledge, a
majority of Indians turn to friends and peers for information
on the subject, a new study has shown.
The latest findings from the Durex Sexual Wellbeing
Global Survey reveal that only 52 per cent of Indians believe
there is enough advice and information available on sexual
health.
The survey found that friends are the largest source of
sexual knowledge for Indian adults at 59 per cent followed by
magazines 58 per cent.
However, 56 per cent of those who took part in the survey
now go online for the information they need – and among adults
who have had formal sex education, the proportion turning to
the internet is 60 per cent.
School sex education is quoted as a major source by only
four out of 10 of those who received it and the guidance given
by parents is just 18 per cent.
Those who have received formal sex education report that
it covered some areas of knowledge more thoroughly than
others.
While 58 per cent say they learned about pregnancy and
54 per cent about HIV/AIDS, fewer (30 per cent) were taught
anything about the emotional aspects of sex. MORE PTI SPC
