Hynix develops new power-efficient memory chip
By Lee Youkyung
SEOUL, Oct. 12 (Yonhap) -- Hynix Semiconductor Inc., the world's No. 2 memory
chip maker, said Monday that it started mass producing a new memory chip which
consumes less power than previous semiconductors.
The 1-gigabit DDR3 dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chip, based on
54-nanometer technology, can save roughly 30 percent power and handle data nearly
twice as fast as DDR2 chips., Hynix said. A nanometer is one-billionth of a
meter.
One-gigabit DDR3 DRAM chips currently account for 87 percent of the global DDR3
market, according to a global market researcher iSuppli.
"Energy-efficient products are gaining attention across the information
technology industry, from mobile products to data center," said Kim Jae-soon, a
Hynix spokesman.
Hynix said it plans to apply energy-efficient technology to future products,
including 2-gigabit DDR3 based on 44-nanometer technology that would be mass
produced later in the current quarter. Market researchers estimate that the
2-gigabit DDR3 would overtake more than half of the DDR3 DRAM market by 2011.
Hynix said it aims to increase the portion of DDR3 in its total DRAM production
to more than 50 percent by year-end from the current 30 percent.
Hynix and its local rival Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest chip
maker, dominate nearly 70 percent of the world DDR3 market.
