FISHERIES PROJECTED TO CONTRIBUTE 4 PCT TO GDP: MINISTER

Jakarta, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - The fishery sector is expected to contribute 4 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2014, a minister said.

"The current contribution of the fishery sector to the GDP is 2.7 percent. We hope that it would increase its contribution to 4 percent in 2014," Minister for National Development Planning/Head of the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas), Paskah Suzetta said here on Monday.

He said that the government had to reduce explorations in the field of oil and gas and turn to the maritime sector for the development of the economic sector, such as the fishery sector.

The minister said that Japan which was far smaller than Indonesia had developed its fishery sector.

The development of the fishery sector in Indonesia which had a maritime area covering 5.4 million sq km was still hampered, he said.

For that, the minister said, the government was drawing up a blue print on the development of its maritime areas in a period of five years to come.

He said that Indonesia's coastal and maritime areas contributed 21 percent to the GDP.

The minister explained that the contribution of the fishery sector to the GDP was 2.79 percent, maritime industry 2.1 percent, mining 9.13 percent, sea transportation 1.48 percent, marine tourism 1.52 percent, sea communications 1.01 percent and marine services 1.32 percent.
