INDONESIA TO SOLIDIFY DEFENSE COOPERATION WITH SRI LANKA

Jakarta, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Sri Lanka have agreed to solidify their defense cooperation that has so far been going well, the secretary general of the Indonesian ministry of defense, Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin said here on Monday.

Sjamsoeddin said before leaving for Sri Lanka that the agreement would be put in a memorandum to be signed by representatives of the two countries.

"So far the defense cooperation between the two countries cover exchange of officers and sending of officers to command school which is basically education and training," he said.

In the future, the two countries agreed to enhance their cooperation to cover defense industry, he said.

Sri Lanka ambassador to Indonesia Nanda Mallawaarachchi said earlier that Sri Lanka had had good bilateral relations with Indonesia since Sri Lanka's independence on February 4, 1948 from Britain.

"We wish to strengthen the relations to also cover other fields such as industry, politics and culture besides economy," Mallawaarachchi said.

In connection with it, the two countries had already signed an agreement in New York, the United States in 2008 to increase the two countries' cooperation, Mallawaarachchi said.

"We are glad with the development of the defense cooperation that have been developed so far between the two countries particularly in the field of training and education and we hope it could be stepped up in the future," Mallwaarachchi said.

The two countries had also agreed to enhance cooperation in fight against terrorism.***4***
