INDONESIA TO HELP SECURE APEC SUMMIT IN SINGAPORE
Batam, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia will help secure the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) summit to be held in Singapore next month, National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said here on Monday.
Indonesia had been asked to help secure border regions while the summit is in progress, he said when visiting the Riau Islands regional police command.
"The Riau Islands regional police command will participate in joint operations to secure the APEC summit," he said upon arrival from attending the 57th Interpol meeting in Singapore.
He said the agreement to help secure the APEC Summit was made at a meeting with the Singapore police chief on the sidelines of the 57th Interpol meeting now still underway in Singapore.
Besides meeting with the Singapore police chief, Danuri said, he had also met with national security officials of several neighboring countries, including the Australian minister of home affairs and Japan's minister of security.
At the meeting, he said, various issues, including intellectual property rights, terrorism and human trafficking were discussed.
"The issues discussed varied including terrorism , intellectual property rights and people trafficking," he said.
US President Barack Obama is scheduled to attend the APEC Summit.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs confirmed that President Obama would attend the summit which would be held on November 14-15 and attended by leaders from 21 countries.
"President Obama hopes to make proposals for cooperation with APEC leaders to increase investment and open trade, support economic recovery and sustainable development and overcome major challenges faced by the region and the world," Gibbs said.***5***
