NAASP SOM OPENS IN JAKARTA WITH REPS FROM 58 COUNTRIES
Jakarta, Oct 12 (ANTARA) - As many as 164 participants from 58 Asian and African countries are attending a Senior Officials Meeting (SOM) of the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership (NAASP) at the Borobudur Hotel, Jakarta, October 12-13, 2009.
"The meeting is intended to maintain the NAASP momentum as well as to discuss preparations for an NAASP Summit in 2010 in South Africa," said Director General for Asia Pasific and African Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hamzah Thayeb, after the opening ceremony of the SOM here on Monday.
Hamzah said the NAASP senior officials meeting would discuss several topics, namely the continuation of all members' commitment to organizing capacity building courses for Palestinian people, preparations for the NAASP Summit 2010 in South Africa and the naming of co-chairmen for the next NAASP senior officials meeting.
The NAASP summit was expected to issue a "Jakarta Statement" outliining some strategic moves in Asia-Africa cooperation, capacity building for Palestine and other cooperation mechanisms for countries in the two regions.
"We hope a NAASP agenda will be discussed every year in order to maintain members' commitment to the organization," Hamzah added.
Meanwhile, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Triyono Wibowo, in his speech opening the NAASP senior officials meeting, expressed hope Asia and African countries would be able to tackle global challenges together as well as increase the prosperity of all members of the organization.
"The number of participants attending this year's senior officials meeting shows the strong commitment of all member countries to NAASP," Triyono said.
The NASP senior officials meeting was a strategic form of partnership which was established during the Asia-Africa Summit in 2005 in Jakarta. The 2005 meeting itself was held to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Asia-Africa Conference in 1955 in Bandung, West Java.
In the 2005 Asia-Africa Summit, Indonesia and South Africa were appointed as NAASP co-chairs.
At the NAASP senior officials meeting, Indonesia is being represented by a delegation comprising the Indonesian ambassador in Pretoria, Sugeng Rahardjo, and officials os several government ministties such as foreign affairs, state secretariat, culture and tourism, cooperatives and small- and medium enterprises.
