SICK PADANG RESIDENTS PACK US FIELD HOSPITAL

Padang, Oct 13 (ANTARA) - A US field hospital erected on a plot of land belonging to state railway company PJKA in East Sawahan sub-district, Padang, on Tuesday was packed with people from various parts of West Sumatra.

The US field hospital's chief, Major Olson, said the hospital attracted an average 200 people per day.

He said the people coming to the hospital were not only those who broke bones or sustained injuries in the devastating September 30 earthquake but also locals suffering from diarrhea and respiratory infections.

Olson said the US hospital had so far not met with any major obstacles in dealing with and serving the local community.

"There's no problem because people here in general have patience," he said, adding the field hospital was open from 08.00 in the morning until 19:00 in the evening.

The hospital staff consisted of 22 physicians and 40 para medics.
He said he still did not know how long the field hospital would operate in Padang. "I do not know but I think it will depend on when we are no longer needed," he said.

Hundreds of residents seeking treatment at the US field hospital were willing to stand in line since morning.

"I have been standing in line for four-and-a-half hours, since 09.00 this morning," said Rosna Eli (57), a resident of Padang's Andalas area.

She said she had heard about the US field hospital from other residents who had been at the hospital before her.

"I suffer from ulcers and high blood pressure. I was treated at the M Djamil Hosptial in Padang but now I want to try medical treatment here," she said.

Yusma (75), another Padang resident, said he had been waiting for his turn to be treated for three-and-a-half hours. He was suffering from back pains and a problem with his liver.

Nursini (70), a resident of Lubuk Lintah, Padang, said she often had headaches and blurred eye-sight. "I've been lining up since 08.00 am," she said.
