RI TO BECOME BIGGEST ENERGY IMPORTER IN 2020

Solo, iNDONESIA, Oct 17 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has been predicted to become one of the biggest energy importer countries in 2020 if it continues to depend on its conventional energy sources, the National Atomic and Energy Agency (BATAN) chief said.

"Our power plants still depend much on the use of coal, oil and gas as their energy sources," BATAN chief Hudi Hastowo said here on Saturday.

In order to meet its need for consumption Indonesia is now importing 350 thousand barrels of oil per day, and the subsidy it spends to purchase the fuel oil reached Rp70 trillion, he said.

"If no other alternatives are found, this condition will put a heavy burden on Indonesia," he said.

Among the alternatives that could be taken is to develop a nuclear power plant project.

He said that BATAN in its planning to build a nuke power plant had proposed three locations, namely Ujung Lembah Abang, Ujung Watu and Ujung Muria, all in Jepara district, Central Java.

The BATAN chief said that his side had conducted a very careful study in choosing the places for the construction of a nuke power plant.

Matters that were thoroughly studied included the safety and comfort of the local people living around a nuke power plant.***
