News Focus: YUDHOYONO RECRUITING PERSONNEL FOR NEW CABINET

Jakarta, Oct 17 (ANTARA) - After being focused on the devastation and sufferings caused by the September 30 earthquake in West Sumatra, the Indonesian public's attention has now turned to President-elect Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's activity in recruiting people for positions in his next cabinet.
It is quite logical for the people to pay serious attention to the cabinet ministers' selection process because they have all along expressed the hope that the government will improve the living standards of Indonesia's 240 million population.
Yudhoyono who won re-election in the presidential race last July in competition with former president Megawati Soekarnoputri and Vice President Jusuf Kalla, has since Saturday been calling several prospective ministers prior to his inauguration for his second term in office from 2009 to 2014.

The People's Consultative Assembly or MPR on October 20, 2009 is scheduled to install Yudhoyono and Vice President-elect Boediono.

President Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla as well as other United Indonesia cabinet members will end their term of office on Monday (Oct 19).

Yudhoyono called the cabinet minister candidates to his residence in Puri Cikeas Indah, Bogor, West Java province for a special interview after ringing up the candidates who were considered worthy to fill the position of the 2nd United Indonesia Cabinet ministers.

On Saturday morning, the would-be ministers underwent such a test of feasibility through direct interviews conducted by Yudhoyono, along with vice president-elect, Boediono.

According to presidential spokesman Andi Mallarangeng here on Saturday the number of prospective ministers who underwent the interview on Saturday is half the number of seats available in as many as 34 cabinet positions.

The number of ministries like those set under Law No. 39 of 2008 on state ministries would not be more than 34.

At the end of the interview, the candidates were presented with integrity pacts and political contracts to be signed which contains the targets they need to accomplish for five years in office and code of ethics which they must obey.

After the feasibility test, the candidates will undergo tests of health at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital on Sunday and Monday or October 18-19, 2009.

At the farewell gathering at the state palace on Oct.16, President Yudhoyono who was among others accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono said only a small portion of United Indonesia Cabinet ministers who will resume their jobs in the next five years government.

"Some will go but some stay," he said, adding that most of the ministers will continue their works in other fields of service.

Regarding Jusuf Kalla, Yudhoyono said "I had a chat with him (Kalla) before the event began. I am glad after he told me he would continue his service to the country and nation."
He said Jusuf Kalla among others planned to be active in helping develop the country's eastern regions and renewable energy sources as well as to contribute to resolution of conflicts in the regions.

"He said he would do everything he could for the nation and the country. Therefore, as a friend, I feel happy and will always pray for him so that he will achieve his goals" the president said.

Regarding the prospective ministers, several new faces who were called by the president included Indonesia's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia, Salim Assegaf Al-Jufri, former national police chief Sutanto, Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) president, Tifatul Sembiring, former military chief, Djoko Suyanto and West Sumatra governor, Gamawan Fauzi.

Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, one of the incumbent ministers who was called to the Cikeas is expected to serve again as a minister in the economic sector in President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's cabinet for the 2009-2014 period.

Though she did not mention the exact ministerial post she would occupy, Sri Mulyani said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President-elect Boediono had told she would serve as a minister for the second time.

"The president asked me to join his second-term cabinet. The first thing he instructed to me to do was to increase economic works while continuing to promote and maintain the good results from the government's program to the people," Mulyani said after being interviewed at the president's residence in Cikeas.

The former monetary observer added President Yudhoyono had also asked her to increase job opportunities, lower the poverty rate and induce quality economic growth.

In the fiscal sector, Mulyani said, the president wanted her to create economic instruments to improve the people's living standards. The president also asked her to design a funding scheme in which the money would not only come from the central government but also from the regional budgets and private parties.

Yudhoyono, also expected her to increase Indonesia's role in fighting for the interest of developed countries in international forums such as G20 and APEC, Sri Mulyani disclosed.***
