LS Cable wins approval to enter China's nuclear power market

By Lee Youkyung
SEOUL, Oct. 20 (Yonhap) -- LS Cable Ltd., South Korea's No. 1 manufacturer of
power cables, said Tuesday that its nuclear power cables have won the safety
approval of China's state-run nuclear agency to launch sales in the fast-growing
market.
The company said the cables, which have a high resistance and durability to
exposure from radioactive rays, passed the standards set out by China Nuclear
Power Engineering Co. (CNPEC), winning the environmental qualification (EQ)
needed to enter the Chinese market.
The approved cables are used in nuclear power plants and are designed to resist
radioactive rays of up to 200 mega rad, allowing them to remain operable for a
nuclear power plant's average lifespan of 40 years, the company said.
LS Cable was the second firm to begin production of such nuclear power cables
after the world's No. 1 cable maker, Nexans of France, first began production,
the company added.
The approval paves the way for the company to launch its business in the fast
growing Chinese market, which accounts for 30 percent of the global market.
The company predicted that the Chinese market for nuclear power cables would be
worth over 3 trillion won (US$2.57 billion) by 2025 as steep economic growth
there is expected to create high demand for electricity.
