Samsung SDI posts 48 pct rise in Q3 earnings

SEOUL, Oct. 20 (Yonhap) -- Samsung SDI Co., the world's No. 2 maker of plasma
display panels (PDP), said Tuesday that its consolidated third-quarter earnings
rose 48 percent from a year earlier on robust sales in its lithium-ion batteries
division.
Net profit stood at 87 billion won (US$73.8 million) in the July-September
period, up from 58.7 billion won a year earlier, the company said in a regulatory
filing.
Its bottom line was also 50 percent higher from the second quarter -- above a
market consensus of 66.7 billion won, according to Yonhap Infomax, the financial
news arm of Yonhap News Agency.
Sales, however, fell 9 percent on-year to 1.35 trillion won while operating
profit advanced 10 percent to 88.1 billion won, the company said.
