S. Korea may develop military satellites with Germany: official
By Sam Kim
SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Yonhap) -- South Korea is considering teaming up with Germany to develop at least four satellites dedicated to collecting military intelligence by 2020, an official said Wednesday.
"We are only examining it as a potential long-term plan," Won Tae-jae, spokesman
at the Ministry of National Defense, told reporters. Germany has the technology
to develop its own military satellites, he said.
The South Korean military currently relies on commercial satellites to collect
information on North Korea, with which it is technically at war after the 1950-53
Korean War ended in a truce.
The U.S., which has 28,500 troops stationed here, also shares its satellite
intelligence with South Korea, but the information may be limited, analysts say.
