BOXING - CHRIS JOHN TO ATTEND WBA CONVENTION IN COLOMBIA
Semarang, Oct 21 (ANTARA) - WBA featherweight world champion Chris John has been invited to attend a World Boxing Association (WBA) convention to be held in Cartegana, Colombia, November 16, 2009.
"I got an invitation to attend the convention and I'll be there," said the boxer nicknamed 'The Dragon' when contacted in Semarang on Wednesday.
According to the husband of former Central Java wushu athlete , Anna Maria Megawati, he had heard other champions in WBA would also be at the convention.
Asked if there would be something the WBA would present him with such as the WBA title or other, Chris said he did not know exactly.
He said he had been invited to the convention because he was not only a world champion but a Super Champion, a title awarded to him after successfully defending his featherweight championship ten times in a row.
The Super Champion title was conferred on him personally by WBA President Gilberto Mendoza Jr. when was preparing himself for his match with Rocky Juarez at the MGM Grand Las Vegas, Nevada, United States, on September 19, 2009.
About his upcoming fight, he said that until now there had been no discussion about it with his manager and trainer, Craig Christian.
"Maybe I'll get back in to the ring next year or 2010 because now the time is so short and WBA itself will be busy organizing the convention,' he said.
In his latest fight on September 19, 2009, the boxer from Banjarnegara sub-district, Central Java, retained his WBA title in a fight against his challenger, Rocky Juarez.
Herry's Gym Assistant Manager Toni Priatna who was contacted separately, said that although Chris's next fight schedule had not yet fixed, it would still be a matter of "choice" or selection.
"But for the mandatory fight , the time is still far off because according to WBA rules, Super Champions League title holders are given a 2.5-year grace period before returning to the ring," he said.
