LG Electronics posts 3,144 pct on-year jump in Q3 earnings

SEOUL, Oct. 21 (Yonhap) -- LG Electronics Inc., the world's No. 2 maker of liquid
crystal display (LCD) TVs, said Wednesday that its third-quarter earnings soared
3,144 percent from a year earlier thanks to a surge in global demand for its
mobile handsets and LCD TVs.

LG Electronics registered a net profit of 807.2 billion won (US$685 million) in
the July-September period, compared with just 24.9 billion won a year earlier,
the company said in a regulatory filing. LG Electronics is also the world's third
largest mobile handset maker after Nokia and Samsung Electronics.
The company's bottom line, however, fell 30 percent from the second quarter after
it posted record high quarterly profits.
The figure was above a market consensus of 646 billion won, according to Yonhap
Infomax, the financial news arm of Yonhap News Agency.
Sales rose 14 percent on year to 7.87 trillion won while operating profit climbed
79 percent to 602.8 billion won, the company said.
