IPU assembly concluded in Geneva



GENEVA, Oct. 22 (Saba) - The 121st assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union was concluded in Geneva after discussions were held during the period from 19 to 21 October in Geneva.

Yemen participated in the assembly through a parliamentary delegation headed by deputy Speaker Hameer bin Abdullah al-Ahmar.

The agenda included election of the President and Vice-Presidents of the 121st Assembly, consideration of possible requests for the inclusion of an emergency item in the agenda, panel discussions on the subject items chosen for debate during the 122nd Assembly (Bangkok, 27 March - 1st April 2010).

The IPU reviewed a number of topics related to its works and activities in addition to the preparations its next conference to be held in Bangkok.

On the sidelines of the assembly, the Yemeni delegation met a number of the delegations for coordinating and consulting over topics discussed in the meetings of the IPU.

The delegation also discussed with a number of the delegations of brotherly and friendly countries issues related to strengthening the bilateral relations between Yemen and their countries in the parliamentary field.

The delegation also briefed the IPU Secretary-General and the chairman of Public Freedoms and Human Rights Committee on legislations and laws enacted by Yemen in the field of public freedoms and human rights.

The IPU is the international organization of Parliaments (Article 1 of the Statutes of the Inter-Parliamentary Union). It was established in 1889.

The Union is the focal point for world-wide parliamentary dialogue and works for peace and co-operation among peoples and for the firm establishment of representative democracy.

The IPU supports the efforts of the United Nations, whose objectives it shares, and works in close co-operation with it. The Union also co-operates with regional inter-parliamentary organizations, as well as with international intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations which are motivated by the same ideals.

The IPU is financed primarily by its members out of public funds. The site of the Union's Headquarters is Geneva (Switzerland).
