FADEL TO INCREASE FISHERMEN`S INCOME

Jakarta, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - Newly appointed Minister for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Fadel Muhammad said he had made a commitment to increase Indonesian fishermen's income and improve their welfare.

"I will do my best to increase fishermen's income by among other things arranging fish prices and markets and removing barriers," the minister said after posing for a group picture with other new ministers at the State Palace here on Thursday.

He also promised to overcome fish theft in the country by introducing regulations and having cooperation with the navy and police.

The minister said that he had earlier received directives on the importance of maintaining Indonesia's integrity as a big maritime country.

Besides, he also has received directives on the importance of preserving natural resources for the interest of coastal regions and backward areas.

"We need to coordinate with relevant parties such as the navy and the transportation ministry so that my assignment would become clear and successful in the future," he said.

Fadel Muhamad was elected maritime affairs and fisheries minister succeeding Freddy Numberi who has been named transportation minister.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono installed 34 new ministers of his Second United Indonesia Cabinet for the 2009 - 2014 term of office at the State Palace on Thursday.

Also installed on the occasion were three state officials with ministerial rank. The inauguration ceremony which commenced at 2 pm local time, was also attended by Mrs Ani Yudhoyono and Vice President Boediono and his wife Herawati.

Earlier, at 10 pm on Wednesday, the president, accompanied by Vice President Boediono, Sudi Silalahi and Presidential Spokesman Andi Mallarangeng, announced the lineup of the United Indonesia Cabinet for the next 2009 - 2014 term.***
