GAMAWAN FAUZI FIRST CIVILIAN IN HOME AFFAIRS MINISTER`S POST
Palembang, Indonesia, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - Gamawan Fauzi who was installed as home affairs minister by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on Thursday is the very first civilian to occupy the post, a local official said.
South Sumatra Vice Governor Eddy Yusuf, when asked to comment on the line-up of the new cabinet, said Gamawan Fauzi's appointment as home affairs minister was historic and a big step forward because since 1968 the post was always given to figures with a military background.
Eddy Yusuf hoped the trend would continue and called on Gamawan Fauzi to perform well and not to embarass "local people."
He said Gamawan Fauzi, who was governor of West Sumatra province, had to be able to prove that local people if trusted could also carry out the task well.
He said so far the post was always filled by military men and it was only now that a civilian was appointed to the post.
In view of that he said he hoped Gamawan Fauzi could show his best performance and meet the expectations of local people.
Regarding the line-up, Eddy Yusuf said he could not as yet comment because the new ministers would only start work on Friday.
He said President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono was a man who never broke a promise and therefore most of the cabinet posts had been spread among figures from the parties that had supported him in his bid for re-election.
He expressed hope that the new ministers for the 2009-2014 period would be able to carry out their tasks well.***
