NEW MINISTER VOWS TO MANAGE DEFENSE BUDGET MORE EFFICIENTLY
Jakarta, Oct 22 (ANTARA) - Newly-installed Defense Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro vowed on Thursday to manage the defense budget as efficiently as possible to give maximum support to the national defense system.
"This is in line with the message of the President that defense budget must be managed effectively and efficiently," Purnomo said after attending a ceremony marking the transfer of post of coordinating minister for political, legal and security affairs from Widodo AS to Djoko Suyanto here.
Purnomo said the existing defense budget must be distributed among all the working units at the Defense Ministry, the Indonesian Military Headquarters, the Army Headquarters, the Navy Headquarters and the Air Force Headquarters.
"So it must be managed properly, including that for the procurement of main armament system," he said.
To that end, the Defense Ministry would intensify supervision by cooperating with the Supreme Audit Board (BPK) and the State Finance and Development Comptroller (BPKP), among others, he said.
"To procure main armament system, we will intensify a multi years budgeting system so the possibility of budget leakage can be minimized," he said.
He said the budget leakage at the Defense Ministry had fallen significantly now. "And we will continue to reduce it."
He also said he would try to promote soldiers' living standards and get defense budget raised in the years to come. "Of course, I will do that but in stages. And we will also focus on empowering the domestic defense industry."
The time had come for the domestic defense industry to be export-oriented, he said.
"Our defense industry has exported its products but the export must be further increased," he said.
Purnomo was appointed defense minister in the lineup of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's second cabinet for the 2009-2014 period announced on Wednesday. Purnomo who was formerly energy and mineral resources minister replaced Juwono Sudarsono.***
