Resettlement of displaced Tamils to start in LTTE strongholds

T V Sriram
Colombo, Oct 23 (PTI) Sri Lanka has identified the former
strongholds of the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam),
Mullaitivu and Kilinochchi among the areas which will witness
resettlement of Tamils displaced by the ethnic conflict in the
northern part of the country.

Kilinochchi was the administrative centre of the now
vanquished LTTE in what was then claimed to be the separate
state of Eelam.
Mullaitivu was the military stronghold of the LTTE for
many years, from which it directed most operations against the
security forces. This was also the headquarters of its leader
Velupillai Prabhakaran, an official release issued Friday
said.
The current phase which began Thursday, will see the
resettlement of a total of 41,685 people from 12,095 families.
The government had earlier resettled more than 15,900
IDPs of the total 2.53 lakh, which included the elderly and
pregnant women while at the same time reuniting them with
their families, according to their wish.
The elderly who had no family were sent to institutional
care while orphan children were resettled under foster care
through courts, the release by the Presidential Secretariat
added.
The completion of the current resettlement would leave
2,10,138 IDPs in relief centres who will also be resettled
soon. PTI TVS
