The accused, including Delhi Police officers Jag Parvesh
Chand and B S Meena, were facing charges under Section 420
(cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable security) and 120B
(criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The policemen were then posted with the Foreigners
Regional Registration Office and have been accused of giving
travel clearances without valid documents to victims.
Seven accused died during the pendency of the case.
As many as 565 illegal immigrants of various countries
including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka had
boarded the ship for Italy on December 25, 1996, which met
with an accident near Malta, resulting in the drowning of 290
passengers, including over 170 Indians.
The Indian immigrants had left Delhi in September 1996 on
the assurance by travel agents that they would be taken to
various European countries.
The passengers had taken off for Dubai from Delhi by
various Gulf-based airlines after getting entry at the Indira
Gandhi International airport here, the Central Bureau of
Investigation (CBI) alleged.
The passengers then gathered at a particular place in the
UAE and boarded the ship together. PTI SJK
