Gov't reinforces protection of whistle-blowers

SEOUL, Oct. 27 (Yonhap) -- The Cabinet on Tuesday approved a revision to a law on the protection of whistle-blowers, stepping up its anti-corruption drive.

Under the revised law, those who reveal the identity or personal information of
whistle-blowers can be punished by up to three years in jail and a fine of up to
20 million won (US$17,000).
It also states that employers caught seeking to take disciplinary measures,
including dismissals, against whistle-blowers could be imprisoned for up to two
years and slapped with a fine of up to 10 million won.
"There have been cases in which employers have secretly leaked the identity of
whistle-blowers," said Park Hyuk-gu, an official at the Anti-corruption & Civil
Rights Commission.
Also Tuesday, the Cabinet approved a bill to offer monthly welfare benefits to
low-income adults who are severely handicapped.
