MALAYSIA PROVIDES RP10.8 BILLION MORE FOR W SUMATRA QUAKE VICTIMS

Kuala Lumpur, Oct 27 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has received 3.8 million ringgits (Rp10.8 billion) raised by Malaysian banking CIMB for contribution to the West Sumatra quake victims.

Indonesian Ambassador to Malaysia Da`i Bahtiar symbolically received a check worth 3.8 million ringgits from CIMB Chief Executive Officer, Nazir Razak and Managing Director of `The Star` Linda Ngiam, here on Tuesday.

The CIMB bank raised the funds in cooperation with the daily `The Star.`

"We deploy all of our branch offices in ASEAN to raise the funds. We have 1,150 branches and we are now able to contribute 3.8 million ringgits," Nazir Razak said.

On September 30, 2009, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 on the Richter scale devastated Padang city, the provincial capital of West Sumatra, killing at least 1,117 people.

A total of 1,214 people were suffering from serious injuries, and 1,688 others from minor ones. However, unofficial estimates put the number of victims at thousands, as many were buried under the rubble of the collapsed buildings.

The earthquake also destroyed 101,653 houses, and caused damage to 97,995 others.

A number of hotels, restaurants and their supporting facilities were also destroyed. Of the 47 star-rated hotels in the province, 24 were damaged, 11 of which devastated, like the Ambacang, Rocky Plaza, Mariani, Nuasa and Hayam Wuruk hotels.
