OIL SPILL RAISES NTT SEA TEMPERATURE
Kupang, Oct 27 (ANTARA) - The crude oil contamination of the Timor Sea after the explosion of the Montara gas field on August 21, 2009, may also affect the weather over East Nusa Tenggara.
If the oil spill is serious, it would raise sea temperature creating cloud clusters, and may be heavy rainfall, the head of the Kupang meteorology agency in El Tari Syapii said at his office here Tuesday.
Following the Montara gas field explosion, a massive spill of 500,000 liters, or 1,200 barrels, of crude oil covered the Timor Sea everyday.
Syapii said that a comprehensive scientific study needs to be done by competent institutions for credible and scientific answers about the massive oil spill.
The head of Lasiana Climatology Station in Kupang Purwanto on a different occasion revealed that he still has no idea about the exact impact of the oil spill on weather over NTT.
Meanwhile according to the Regional Environmental Agency (BLHD) which had conducted a research on sea water samples, the Timor Sea waters had been seriously contaminated with oil from the Montara gas field.
He also said that based the result of physics laboratory analysis, the samples had released oil odor.
