IFCW TO INTRODUCE UNIQUE BONEBONE VILLAGE TO INT'L WORLD
Enrekang, S Sulawesi, Oct 27 (ANTARA) - The International Forum for Children`s Welfare (IFCW) plans to introduce Bonebone village in Enrekang disrict, South Sulawesi, Indonesia, to the world as a community that has permanently renounced tobacco smoking as a vice.
Eka Febriansyah, official spokesperson of the Enrekang district administration, said here Tuesday, the inhabitants of Bonebone village were unique because none of them smoke as they consider tobacco as a "source of ignorance."
They had all vowed not to smoke out of awareness the habit causes health problems and might also affect a family`s finances so much that parents cannot afford to send their children to school.
The people of the village located at the foot of Mount Latimojong had also banned the entry of slaughtered chickens and chicken eggs as potential sources of avian influenza or the H5N1 virus, Eka said.
Bonebone Village residents were also known for their concern for environmental conservation. The village administration had introduced a rule that any villager who plans to get married is required to plant at least 10 trees before he or she can get a marriage certificate.
To get a marriage certificate, the couple must get a recommendation from the local village chief testifying that they have fulfilled the obligation to plant 10 trees.
"This uniqueness has made IFCW interested in introducing the village to the international world in cooperation with the Indonesian Child Welare Foundation (YKAI)," she said.
The Enrekang district chief, La Tinro La Tunrung, was invited by IFCW to come to Jakarta last October 23 to make a presentation on Bonebone village`s unique social rules and potentials for the production of information materials to be distributed in other countries, Eka said.
At a session with IFCW and YKAI at the Hotel Millennium in Jakarta on October 23, the district chief gave all the required information and data on Bonebine village, she said.
