S. Korea develops key part of fuel cell

by Nam Kwang-sik

SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean state energy research institute said Wednesday that it has succeeded in developing the core component of a fuel cell that generates electricity from a fuel tank.

The Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER) said it has succeeded in the test
production of a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for the first time in South
Korea.
Only two companies in the world -- 3M Co. and DuPont Co. -- own the mass
production technology for the MEAs, the KIER said.
The MEAs developed by the KIER is on par with the products of the global
companies according to the test results, said the KIER.
The development will help facilitate commercial production of the MEA in South
Korea, the researcher said, predicting the MEA global market will reach 5
trillion won (US$4.2 billion) in around 2013.
