Allow Sikh pilgrims to visit Pak to mark Nanak's birth anniv
PM-SIKHS
Srinagar, Oct 28 (PTI) A students' organisation Wednesday
sought Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's intervention in
allowing Sikh pilgrims to join festivities in Pakistan to mark
Guru Nanak's birth anniversary.
"We appeal to the Prime Minister to take serious note of
the travel advisory issued by the Union Home ministry asking
the Sikh pilgrims against visiting Pakistan. We want Singh to
seek a report and inform the Sikhs accordingly," a statement
issued by All India Sikh Students Federation (Kashmir) said.
"We are of the opinion that this sacred yatra should not
be stopped," the statement said.
The advisory had asked "all Indian citizens to avoid
undertaking any visit to Pakistan till the security situation
improves there."
Nearly 200 people have died in terror attacks in Pakistan
this month.
Every year, a large number of Sikhs from India and abroad
visit Pakistan to observe Guru Nanak's birth anniversary. They
visit Nankana Sahib, his birthplace located 80 km from Lahore.
In April, only 375 Indian Sikhs travelled to Pakistan to
participate in the Baisakhi festival. This was in marked
contrast to the 4,000 Sikhs who made the trip last year.
Similarly, about 300 Sikhs came to Pakistan this month to
attend the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Ramdas but
cut short their visit after an attack on the army's General
Headquarters in Rawalpindi. PTI AMS
