INDONESIA WANTS TO PLAY GREATER AID-GIVING ROLE IN AFGHANISTAN

Jakarta, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - Indonesia wants to play a greater aid-giving role in Afghanistan and help the war-torn country solve some of its problems, Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said.

He made the statement after accompanying President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in listening to a progress report from the Indonesian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Erman Hidayat, at the presidential office here Wednesday.

"We and ambassador Erman Hidayat were just now received by the president to discuss the situation in Afghanistan. The discussion was based on a briefing by the ambassador and underlined Indonesia`s concern over the situation in Afghanistan and also Indonesia`s efforts to promote peace," Marty said.

He said the role Indonesia could play in assisting Afghanistan depended on the Afghan government`s needs because there was already a lot of international attention for Afghanistan.

"We know that Afghanistan is already receiving much international attention, Indonesia needs to see what more is needed by the Afghan government, " he said.

Marty pointed out Indonesia had experience in the field of improvement of the capacity of human resources and also in

resolution of conflicts through reconciliation.

"We do not want to offer assistance without listening first. We want to align our assistance with the international assistance. We also must consider our own capabilities," he said.

As a first step toward increasing Indonesia`s aid-giving role, the Indonesian embassy in Kabul would improve its capacity in serving as a bridge of communication between the Indonesian and Afghan governments, Marty said.

On the occasion, the President was also accompanied by presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal.
