CHINESE SENTENCED TO FIVE YEARS OVER DRUG CASE
Surabaya, Oct 28 (ANTARA) - A district court in Surabaya, East Java, sentenced Guiqing Lin, a Chinese national, to five years in jail for smuggling in 8,790 pills containing ketamine and coffeine worth Rp2.89 billion.
Chief judge Ahmad Ardianda in his verdict read out on Wednesday also ordered the defendant to pay a fine of Rp5 million or spend an additional six months in prison.
The 24-year old woman was considered distributing pharmaceutical substances without permit thus violating the law on health.
"Because her action violated Law Number 23 of 1992 we sentenced her to five years in jail," the chief judge said.
The defendant was caught by customs officials at Surabaya`s Juanda airport on April 25, 2009 carrying thousands of pink-colored pills in her travel bag.
She arrived at the airport aboard Silk Air number MI-222 from Singapore.
The pills contained ketamine and coffeine. The two chemical substances did not meet pharmaceutical standards and therefore the law imposed on her was not the psychothropic law but the health law.
"The incriminating factor behind the case is that her action would damage the younger generation," Ardianda said.
Upon hearing the verdict the defendant asked time to consider whether she would appeal it or not.
The sentence was below seven years the prosecutor had demanded.
"We will submit the result to the leader before filing an appeal," she said.
