EARTHQUAKE RATTLES NORTH SULAWESI, INDONESIA
Jakarta, Oct. 29 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale hit Bitung, North Sulawesi, at 12.21 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB) on Thursday.
The quake`s epicenter was located at 1.37 degrees northern latitude, 126.35 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 30 km below sea level, around 129 km southeast of Bitung, about 130 km northwest of Ternate, 168 km southeast of Manado, 255 km northwest of Labuha (North Maluku), and 266 km southeast of Tahuna (North Sulawesi), according to information of the national meteorological and geophysics (BMKG) office.
Earlier at 8.34 WIB, a 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck Jayapura, Papua Province.
The temblor`s epicenter was located at 5.28 degrees southern latitude, 140.47 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 60 km, some 306 km southwest of Jayapura.
Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," the edge of a tectonic plate prone to seismic upheavals, was hit by six earthquakes on Sunday (Oct. 25).
The National Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquakes had hit Tual (Maluku Province), Waingapu (East Nusa Tenggara - NTT) Province), Bitung (North Sulawesi Province), Siberutmentawai (West Sumatra), and Saumlaki (Maluku).
On Saturday evening (Oct. 24), a powerful earthquake measuring 7.3 on the Richter scale rocked Saumlaki, Maluku Tenggara Barat (MTB) and Maluku Barat Daya (MBD) districts, Maluku Province.
