INDONESIAN GOVT TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING SMALL ENTERPRISES : MINISTER
Jakarta, Oct 29 (ANTARA) - Newly-installed Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises Minister Syarif Hasan said his ministry would continue to support small enterprises in the country.
"About 98 percent of Indonesia`s economy is run by micro businesses. Facilitating micro business not only brings prosperity to the entrepreneurs but also helps reduce the unemployment rate in Indonesia," said the minister here on Thursday when attending the opening of the National Summit 2009 in the Birawa Assembly Hall of the Bumi Karsa Bidakara Hotel.
At the two-day National Summit 2009 (Oct 29-31), Syarif said, his department, along with related parties such as banks and regional administrations, would discuss the kind of assistance the government needed to give to small and medium enterprises.
The meeting was also expected to find solutions to the obstacles that occurred in the past.
"Our meetings with stakeholders from across the country at the National Summit will hopefully produce recommendations about future steps to help improve the life of small entrepreneurs," Syarif said.
Earlier, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, in his speech officially opening the National Summit 2009, had said the government had committed to set aside Rp 20 Trillion per year from the State l Budget to help provide capital to small entrepreneurs.
"The government will extend loans to entrepreneurs under certain credit schemes to enable them to maintain their businesses and thus prosper," the president said.
But Yudhoyono also emphasized the importance of developing entrepreneurship among the people.
"It is no use providing people with loans if they don`t have the skill to use the funds to make profit," the president said.
The National Summit 2009 is a meeting participated in by the country`s stakeholders such as central and regional governments, members of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, House of Representatives, NGOs, monetary institutions and academics.
Held for the first time, the summit is expected to produce a roadmap for national development in the 2010-2014 period.
The meeting would discuss three main topics, namely the economy, people`s welfare, legal and bureaucratic reforms.
The summit was also expected to formulate ways of accelerating infrastructure development across the country over the next five years. ***3***
