S. Korea offers $200,000 in emergency aid for typhoon-hit Cambodia

SEOUL, Oct. 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's foreign ministry said Friday that Seoul
will provide Cambodia with US$200,000 worth of emergency aid materials as the
country is struggling to recover from a powerful storm.
Tropical Storm Ketsana pounded the northwestern section of Cambodia early this
month, killing 43 people, injuring 67 others, and displacing more than 6,000
households, according to the ministry. Tens of thousands of families suffer from
food shortages, while many rice paddies and roads remain devastated.
Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen requested Seoul's assistance during a summit
with President Lee Myung-bak in Phnom Penh last week, and Lee accepted, the
ministry said.
"The government has decided to provide $200,000 worth of emergency aid materials
to Cambodia to support its recovery efforts and join the international
community's humanitarian assistance," it said in a press release.
