POLICE TO INVESTIGATE TRANSCRIPT ON CRIMINALIZING KPK
Jakarta, Oct 30 (ANTARA) - Police will investigate the circulation of a transcript of a tapped phone conversation containing engineered materials aimed at criminalizing antigraft (KPK) commissioners, the national police chief said.
National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said at a press conference here on Friday he had ordered the force's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) to investigate the case.
"The police will investigate the case. I have ordered the Bareskrim to conduct a probe and investigation," he said.
He said the police would not only investigate the circulation of the transcript but also its contents. "We will involve experts in it," he said.
He said the police would also check its validity. If they discovered any parties misusing their power to conduct wiretapping the police would investigate them thoroughly, he said.
He said the police would confiscate the recording that had spread widely in the media by first asking for a permit from the court.
"The case is not one dependent on a citizen's complaint so we will conduct a probe and investigation at our own initiative," he said.
The police, he said, would apply the law on information and electronic transactions to net those involved in the circulation of the transcript.
He denied that the police had panicked because of the circulation of the transcript. "The police did not panic. The police are not afraid," he said.
General Bambang Hendarso Danuri pledged he would act firmly against police members found involved in the case regardless of their rank or position.
A transcript of a tapped phone conversation has been put up in the mass media recently containing talks aimed at criminalizing the KPK.
Certain police and Attorney General's Office members were mentioned in the recording.
Several names who were mentioned in the recorded were suspected to be involved in efforts to criminalize KPK commissioners and even the name of RI1 (the president) also appeared in it.
The transcript circulated before the detention of two suspended KPK chairmen Chandra M Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto by the police as suspects in a power abuse case. After the transcript went into circulation the two were taken into police custody on Thursday. ***4***
