WB govt`s action disapproved by Meghalaya guv

Shillong, Oct 31 (PTI) The West Bengal government's
'Maoist-for-cop swap' deal to free a police officer would only
encourage activities of armed activists in India, Meghalaya
Governor and former chief of the elite National Security
Guards R S Mooshahary said Saturday.
"It was a difficult and delicate situation and only the
family members (of the officer) know the trauma. But the swap
deal is not the best policy of the state. It encourages the
activists to carry out more such crimes," Mooshahary, also the
former director general of BSF (Border Security Force), told
the valedictory function of a two-day conference of the police
chiefs of NE (Northeastern) states.
He urged police chiefs to "appropriately" advise the
concerned government in such situations and called upon the
security officials to be careful about the spillover of
Maoists activities to other parts of the country, particularly
the North East.
"Maoists are not anti-nationals and secessionists...
They have a certain conviction after they find that the
democratic and constitutional means fail to address their
grievances. So they picked up the gun.
"When such a large number of people are involved in a
movement, there is certainly something wrong in the system. We
have to address the common root cause," he said. PTI
