Human rights situation in Pak "serious": Rehman

PAK-RIGHTS

New Delhi, Oct 31 (PTI) Describing the human rights
situation in Pakistan as "serious", the country's leading
rights activist A I Rehman Saturday said the present crisis
on the terror front has prevented the issue from receiving
required attention there.

"Human rights situation in Pakistan as in many other
developing countries remains serious...problem is that the
state of Pakistan is involved and engaged in such serious
problems that human rights are not receiving the attention
that should be given," Rehman, Pakistan Human Rights
Commission Director, told PTI on the sidelines of 'South Asian
Regional Round Table on Police Reforms, organised by the
Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative.
Rehman, however, said the present government in
Pakistan is "slightly more" sensitive to upholding human
rights than the "previous regime".
There is "a great deal of" awakening and awareness
about human rights among the people of the country, he said.
Listing the steps taken by Pakistan government for
protection of human rights, Rehman said it has created a new
ministry for human rights.
"They (Pakistan government) are trying to do something
about the death penalty," he added.
Pakistan government, which enacted a law against
domestic violence, is now also considering a law to prevent
sexual harrasment of women at workplace, Rehman said.
"But the overall problems are so innate that it will
take time to address the things (issues relating to human
rights violations)," he said. PTI PKU
