CUSTOMS FOIL ATTEMPTS TO SMUGGLE METH WORTH RP25.2 BILLION
Tangerang, Indonesia, Nov 2 (ANTARA) - The Soekarno-Hatta airport's customs service has foiled attempts to smuggle methamphetamine three times worth Rp25.2 billion belonging to an international syndicate from Iran.
The head of the service, Baduri Wijayanta, said on Sunday the office aborted an attempt to smuggle crystal meth weighing more than 1,000 grams worth Rp2.2 billion.
The clear crystal meth was contained in four packets put in two travel bags later detected by the customs through a X-Ray at Terminal II of the airport.
"We seized Iranian national HMA at the terminal who boarded MH711 aircraft and AK who would pick him up at the airport," Wijayanta said on Monday.
Meanwhile last Friday on October 30 the service also foiled an attempt to smuggle more than 5,130 grams of meth worth Rp11.3 billion.
Wijayanta said the clean liquid was put in six bottles from Iran smuggled in by one of the smugglers known by his initial as HRMM who is an Iranian citizen.
Last Wednesday on October 21, the service also confiscated liquid meth weighing 5,358 grams worth Rp11.7 billion put in 14 shampoo and hand soap bottles.
HS, an Iranian national, aboard an EK 356 plane managed to escape as he arrived not with the baggage.
" So the total value of meth confiscated three times in the past two weeks is estimated at Rp25.2 billion," he said.
Wijayanta said the illegal goods came from an international syndicate from Iran like in the case unveiled by customs service last October 19 and 20.
"They have used the airport to smuggle meth into Indonesia from Iran," he said.
The smugglers will be dealt with using Law Number 35 of 2009 on narcotics and are threatened with a death penalty or a life imprisonment.
HMA and AK had declined to speak before newsmen.***
